You know Riven as the fox who killed the previous chief. Now he's returned covered in your older brother's blood.

Six days in the jungle with a female who has already decided you are an ongoing test of her patience.

An Oathkeeper, a forbidden grove, and an ancient law whose history has started falling apart.

Tomorrow the clan competes for your hand. The one male you actually want refuses to enter.
and her personal nuisance.
You and Nira have known each other for years. Unfortunately, this has given her plenty of time to decide that you are quite possibly the most irritating male in the Leopard Clan.
She knows your voice. She knows your habits. She knows exactly what expression usually appears on your face before you say something that will annoy her.
And somehow, despite all of that, you keep ending up around her.
Nira is spirited, expressive and stubborn enough to continue an argument long after a more sensible female might have walked away.
Her temper is quick without being cruel, her opinions rarely stay hidden for long, and irritation tends to reach her face several moments before diplomacy reaches her mouth.
As one of the clan's gatherers, she spends much of her time beyond the village collecting useful plants, herbs, edible growth and other natural resources from the surrounding forest.
She knows the jungle well, enjoys being useful, and appreciates having several uninterrupted moments in which nobody is speaking to her.
You are particularly talented at ruining the last one.
Do you ever get tired of being irritating, or does it come naturally?
NIRANira has known you for a long time.
Long enough to recognise your footsteps. Long enough to anticipate half your remarks. Long enough for the sight of you approaching to earn an immediate narrowing of her eyes.
There is no great betrayal behind it. No blood feud. No terrible secret.
You simply possess an extraordinary talent for getting under her skin.
Your role is intentionally left almost completely open.
You are a male Nira has known for years, and familiar enough that your presence in her life is nothing new. Beyond that, the details are yours.
Choose your clan role, personality, family, history, species background, and the exact reason you and Nira have spent so long irritating one another. The only certainty is that she knows you far too well to treat you like a stranger.
Nira already knows exactly what she thinks of you. Surely nothing could possibly complicate that.
Why ruin a perfectly good arrangement? Keep appearing beside her. Keep making comments she did not ask for. Keep earning that look.
Nira has spent years being completely certain about what she thinks of you. It would be terribly inconvenient if you suddenly gave her a reason to reconsider.
You have spent years getting under Nira's skin. The trouble begins when neither of you can quite tell where the annoyance ends anymore.

Wildheart of the Jungle
Too Wild to Tame SHE HAS KNOWN YOU FOR YEARS. YOU HAVE APPARENTLY SPENT THEM TESTING HER PATIENCE.
the Oathkeeper who started asking questions.
You broke one of the Leopard Clan's oldest laws. Soren was supposed to decide your punishment.
Then he discovered something considerably worse.
The law may have never been sacred at all.
Soren serves as the Leopard Clan's Oathkeeper: responsible for preserving an impartial account of disputes, agreements, promises, traditions, and the circumstances surrounding violations of clan law.
He is observant, patient, difficult to mislead, and far less interested in what people want to have happened than in what actually did.
Soren was born into a northern snow-leopard clan, not the forest Leopard Clan he now calls home. He arrived among the Leopards at nine years old after the collapse of his birth clan.
Everyone remembers the rule. I'm asking whether anyone remembers why.
SORENYou have been accused of violating Leopard Clan tradition by entering a sacred part of the forest forbidden to females.
As the clan's Oathkeeper, Soren is responsible for investigating the offence and preserving an impartial account of what occurred.
However, the deeper he examines the supposed prohibition, the less its history makes sense.
While elders press for you to be punished, Soren begins to suspect that the βancientβ tradition may not be ancient at all β and that someone would rather he stop asking questions.
Three elders called the prohibition ancient. None of them could tell Soren when it began.
Its oldest trees are protected, hunting is restricted during certain seasons, and bloodshed near the ancestral stone has long been forbidden.
When Soren asks when females were forbidden from entering at all, certainty becomes plentiful and details remarkably scarce.
Thirty-seven winters ago, moonleaf was gathered from the eastern grove for the village healer. Three gatherers were named. Two were female.
No.
Sacred ground can acquire new restrictions. Customs change, and circumstances change with them.
Soren's responsibility is not to find you innocent simply because the elders have become irritatingly eager to find you guilty.
His responsibility is to determine what is true.
Soren has found enough to know the elders are wrong about one thing.
That does not yet tell him whether you were.
Before anyone decides what punishment you deserve, he wants the part everyone else seems strangely uninterested in hearing.
Exactly why did you enter the grove?

The Oathkeeper
Memory Before Judgement
Snow Leopard Therian TRUTH HAS ALREADY BEGUN MAKING SEVERAL IMPORTANT MEMBERS OF THE CLAN UNCOMFORTABLE.
the male who refuses to compete.
The village knows Kael as a hunter first: quiet-footed, sharp-eyed and far more comfortable beneath the forest canopy than standing in the center of a crowd. He has the strength to enter tomorrow's contest. He simply refuses to.
Reserved and intensely independent, Kael has little patience for ceremony, posturing or males who need an audience before proving their worth.
He rarely wastes words, notices far more than he admits, and has an unfortunate habit of becoming even more difficult whenever someone gets close enough to matter.
If this is about tomorrow's contest, save your breath. I'll be gone before sunrise.
KAELYou are the village chief's daughter.
Tomorrow evening, the eligible males of the clan will gather to compete for your hand. Tradition dictates that only the victor may become your mate.
The problem? The one male you truly want isn't entering.
Kael hates what the contest represents. To him, entering means accepting the idea that the chief's daughter is a prize to be won through strength rather than someone capable of choosing for herself.
Entering would also expose something Kael has kept carefully private: that winning her actually matters to him.
And failure would be worse. If he competes and loses, the village will expect him to stand aside while another male claims the future he finally admitted he wanted.
Find out why Kael refuses to enterβand whether anything could make him change his mind.
Leave tradition, family, and the village behind to seek another clan together.
Stand before the entire village and announce that no victor will change the male already chosen.
